We have divided this Presentation into Three Parts :
  • PART 1 : My Opening Remarks…
  • PART 2 : A Report of the Term Completed, where I will leave it for you to Judge whether, we have been able to “Walk our Talk”…of what was set out to achieve & what we were able to achieve.
    • And some additional matters we took up as we went along…
  • PART 3 : And then set the “Tone” for the NEXT Term, that this Executive Committee, has been entrusted with….
  • So, before I go into the nitty-gritty of today’s discussions, let me First, begin with… A BIG “Thank you”..


• But 1st… A BIG “Thank you”

  • To ALL the MANSA Members
    • For having Voted & Supported the Current ECM…We are Truly Grateful….
    • One “wonders” How & When these 2 years passed by….
    • And its Has been a learning experience…
  • First, I would like to share a few “cherished moments”…of my Term…
    • When ONE of the MOST Senior Past Presidents said : In all these years the Secretariat seems to be the most busy now during your tenure….
      • I think my efforts paid off in that “ONE moment… Thank You Sir…
      • And let me tell you he has been One of the MOST consistent attendee’s of the EC Meetings…even at his Young age of 94..
    • Another time of the other Past Presidents said : “Capt. Anand you must be a very satisfied man… I reluctantly agreed, but asked him the reason & he feels so :
      • You have achieved so much during your Tenure… it made my Day, Month & my Term in this Office…
  • The Support and “Encouragement” from ALL OTHER Past Presidents…
    • I don’t want to name them for Political reasons… But I’m sure they know, as they have guided & Mentored me throughout..
    • To Many of the Luminaries & Stalwarts of our Industry…
      • Krishna Bhai, Adarsh Sir, Naresh Bhai, Capt. Rao Sir, Dinesh Sir, Mukesh Bhai, Vijayan Sir, Capt. Tiwari Sir….and Manyothers…Believe me the List is long…They have been an Inspiration & Leading Light…


• And 2nd … a Bigger “Thank you”

  • To the Current EC for “almost” EACH member has contributed…
    • In one way or the other..
  • I hope this is not turning out to be the Vote of thanks…
  • YMF & WE for their “fresh & pure” contributions…
    • We will talk more about this later…
  • To my colleagues at NYK…they have supported me tirelessly…
  • To the Secretarial staff… Whom I have seen only condemned…
    • With a little Love & Respect… They have delivered with flying colours…
  • To our Media Consultant
    • Who has delivered 14 times of what we paid him…
      • I shall elaborate later…
  • To our “Generous” Sponsors & Contributors…
    • Have calculated that we have raised close to 1 Crore over the past Two years…
    • Spent MOST of it…for MANSA activities
      • And “Saved” some for the future

Moving on….

• Organisational Behavior

If any organization does not Innovate it inevitably ‘Ages & Declines’…
And in a period of rapid change, such as, the “Present” …the decline is Usually, very FAST...So, in today’s times one needs to take BOLD steps…


• Innovating Organisations

Therefore Innovating Organization’s” are “NOT AFRAID” to continuously Evolve their Business Model…that is ‘Progress’…which is the KEY to “Success”…

• Shopping in a Mall

If the world is shopping at a Mall… Kirana Shops will eventually disappear from the business…

• A Kirana Shop

An Association cannot afford to be like a Kirana Shop….We need to constantly change, evolve, innovate and reach out “Over the Horizon”…

• Last Year - The Thought Was…

Last Year, we said Survive… “We Must”..
And to Revive…We MUST Innovate & that too “Constantly”…

• This Year - The Thought is..

Consistency, Perseverance, Dedication… And Simply Pure Hard Work…We CANNOT afford to rest…

• Report for Last Term

So First, Lets Look at what we did during the Last Term…

Our Score, if you remember, we Scored 12/15…which is 80%

• What was Outstanding Last Year

  • Major Agenda
    • Submit ONE White Paper to the MoS
      • Master plan for development of Port & Terminals in the country was balance for this year
    • Sign MOU with Singapore Shipping Agents
    • Get MANSA back on the Board of Trustee’s
  • Non - Major Agenda Interaction with Indian/Local Trade Bodies


• “15” Major & Non-Major Agenda’s

  • We have Finished the White Paper on the Master Plan for Ports & Terminals… And this Document will be released later today…Please do Read it…as a lot of Work has gone into it…
  • As for Signing “another” MOU… we decided, that since we have NOT being able to make use of the last relationship, we should 1st concentrate on “building” that…Capt. Manish Verma, was volunteered to take up this matter in right earnest…
  • Getting MANSA back on the Board of Trustee’s
    • Well we tried… we tried Very Hard….But unfortunately the GoI has taken a view that they will NOT have ANY Association on the Board of Trustee’s…and are slowly doing away with them…
  • Regarding ‘Interaction’ with Trade Bodies…well, you will see by the end of this Presentation that, we have been rather active on this front…


• Final Score

So, what have we ended up with….?
  • 9/10 on the Major Agenda’s
    • We deducted ½ a Mark for MOU with Overseas Trade Organisations…as we achieved ONLY One MOU…instead of TWO…
    • And another ½ a Mark for having attempted bringing MANSA back on Board of Trustee’s
  • And on the Non-Major Agenda’s we have Scored 5/5… a 100% result…
  • ALL in ALL… we have Score 14/15…which converts to 93.33%....
  • Guess, we have passed the Litmus Test…with flying colours…


• Additional Initiatives

But then we did NOT rest on our Laurels…we were OPEN to ongoing Improvements and DID more than what we had “mandated ourselves” to achieve….
  • We developed a Compliance Manual SPECIALLY for our Members :-
    • For Anti-Trust / Competition Law
    • And the 2nd on Anti Bribery / Corruption Law…from a Indian & Globally Perspective….
  • We researched, coordinated with CISF to develop a SOP for Port Operations for Nhava Sheva & Mumbai Ports…
  • Then, we found that very often we “could NOT” attend meetings in Delhi ‘coz they were called at the LAST moment…
    • So, we appointed Delhi Representatives…to take up issues…
  • And then, to cover the Social Responsibility angle, we signed a MOU with NMIS….But this, we need to work on more diligently…We will..


• Conferences Conducted

But then….What were the highlights….
  • Undoubtedly, the Conference that the MANSA & I MUST compliment the YMF….who have stood ROCK solid & supported the EC in this endeavor…

Also, in the Last Term we had “committed” to Publish some Documents :-
  • SOP for Mumbai & JNPT Ports…we were told by the Chairman / Dy. Chairman, that we have done the work of the Port Authority…
    • We now intend to send a Copy of these Documents to MoS & if possible to the PMO…..I will Personally hand this over to the Secretary or whoever we can get to… to say, that here is the SOP…NOW…Simplify them…Ease of Doing Biz…
  • TWO White Paper’s…on..
    • Formation of a Think Tank for the Maritime Industry…
      • I’m given to understand Boston Consulting Group (BCG) were mandated to research the proposal…
        • I think this is TRULY a Proud thing for MANSA…
    • The Second, White Paper, we will release TODAY….
      • Let see what response we get….
  • And Finally, the 101 Issues Compiled by MANSA :
    • Giving details & Solutions
    • We understand this Document “reached” the PMO
      • And the Prime Minister’s Office has asked for a Fortnightly report on the progress…
      • Again, I think it is commendable…

But then let us NOT forget…WHAT is MANSA’s Core Function…?
  • Have we done Justice to that…
  • Well, I have ALWAYS said…We will do what we are supposed & do MORE…NOT just “More”…or something different
    • And that is from the View Point to build the MANSA Brand… To be recognized as a Trade Body that is doing…”some useful work”…
    • Not just being a “nuisance” factor…
  • So, let’s take a closer look…
    • Issues Tackled :-
      • MbPT = 28
      • JNPT = 23
      • All India basis = 88
      • TOTAL = 139
    • Communications :-
      • Number of Advisories = 589
      • Number of Letter’s to the Ministry = 55
    • Not to mention the Booklet on 101 Issues & Solutions…
    • Some of these were….


• Financial Health

But then MONEY talks…OR should I say MONEY matters…So lets see where we stand…
  • Before the Current EC took over… in 36 years MANSA… I repeat in 36 Years MANSA….received a Sponsorship of Rs. 39.325 Lacs
    • In the Last Term of the EC, we raised Rs. 96.5 Lacs
      • That is a 245% of what was done in 36 Years…I’m Sorry if I’m rubbing this in……
      • The Total of our Expenses has gone up 143%...
        • And mind you again this is a comparison of 36 years Vs 2 Years…
      • Thus we have succeeded in making MANSAfinancially more ACTIVE & ROBUST..
        • This one is for MY detractors……


• Fixed Deposit’s

And we have NOT been selfish….we are & will leave behind “something” SUBSTANTIAL for our Successors…
  • In 36 Years the TOTAL Fixed Deposits were = Rs. 1.11 Crores
  • In the Last TWO years its gone upto Rs. 1.61 crores
    • Which is 45% up… Again I repeat in the Last TWO years…
    • I’m sure we have made a Financial Statement…


• Media Exposure

NOT ONLY…. MANSA’s image has been enhanced….
  • MANSA is being “seen & Heard”… We are visible today…and will be visible Tomorrow…
  • For this we Engaged a Media Consultant
    • Whom we are paying Rs. 3 Lacs Per Annum
    • And have extracted Rs. 23.34 Lacs of Media Coverage
    • A Total of 134 Press Releases
    • MANSA has been quoted or our views been put forward..
      • Whether it was Make in India – Economic Times
      • Or it was Cabbotage Rules, Coastal Shipping, Traffic Congestion, OCT Terminal usage etc. etc…
      • You name it and we were there…


• Sub-Committee’s & Activities

Our Sub-Committee’s have been actively involved in taking up issues…
  • They have been engaged & have delivered…
  • Even on Corporate Responsibility front…
  • But, Yes I admit…there is scope of improvement here…
  • And therefore, this will be taken up in the coming term…
  • And so allow me to take this up a little later…


• Young MANSA Forum’s (YMF) Contirbution

Well, the YMF… What I say will be too little to describe their Herculean efforts…
  • From being a Pillar of Support… Innovation… the Gen NEXT…
  • Its time we started warming up to What the Next Generation wants from us Elders…
  • They Challenged us and Engaged us from Ground Level….to the Sky…
  • They maybe a “thorn” for some…BUT a “Boon” for MOST….
  • Whether it was Conferences, writing White papers, Detailing SOPs, Contributing to Press releases, Partnership with International Trade bodies, Organising Conclaves….
  • But above ALL, the WAY, they came together to put up the 101 issues & their Practical Solutions….
  • Boy, even I had “almost” given up…. But all it took was a “sincere” appeal to them… in a Emergency meeting… And Phew… they put it together….Just like that….
  • Maybe we need to take a Lesson or two from them….
  • A BIG Hurray to the YMF team…Great Job guys….


• Stalwarts & Luminaries

    And then the ELDERS….
  • Even they were excited… It just shows…they STILL have the “Fire in the Belly”….
  • They ALL came forward … to help us…
  • A meeting that was held on 22nd February, 2016…
  • Which eventually resulted in suggesting that the Current EC should continue for another Term…
  • Being a Democratic set up… we put this debate….for FIVE Months…formed a Committee to look into this and get individual feedback…
  • And eventually this lead to calling a EoGBM…on 15th July, 2016…


• Extraordinary General Body Meeting (EoGBM)

    Though this will come up for discussions later… However, FIVE Agenda Points were taken up for discussion :-
  • Extension of term for Current EC & Office bearers
  • Change in Election Process
  • Limit Nominations for Group Companies
  • Regularise the deployment of YMF & WE
  • Appointment of a Non-Executive Chairman…we would like to decide this point TODAY… later…


• Part 3 – Proposed Plan for Next Term

Well, THAT was the Story of the LAST TWO YEARS….What NEXT…?
  • How do we Justify the Extension of the Current EC & Office Bearer’s…?
  • How Do we “Walk the TALK”….?
  • We had sent out an EMAIL about a Month back… asking the EC to revert with their Suggestions……I’ll leave it at that….
  • Again Gentlemen, this needed SOUL searching…. It NEED a SARDAR to “use” his Brain’s…….and that too over a Extended & Long WEEKEND….
  • When the World was celebrating Ganesha….I was hunched over my Laptop….ARGUING with MYSELF….REFUTING my own THOUGHTS….Making NOTES…& then tearing those very Notes…
  • My family, was fuming…’Coz… My Driver went on Leave & I couldn’t take them OUT for Fun times…
  • ‘Coz, I had committed to sending my FINAL Presentation BEFORE the NEXT working day…..
  • I reached out to the YMF…AND for ONCE…I dare say…They EVEN DID NOT respond……
  • So….this is What I came up with…
